CHAPTER FOURTEEN

RUSSELL

Great.

Russell didn’t want to die on his knees in a drug store. His brain worked to find a solution out of the dire situation he found himself in. “Let’s take it easy and talk things out, all right?”

“Wallet. Where is it?” the so-called clerk asked, pressing the barrel of his revolver into Russell’s head harder.

“It’s right here on the ground next to me. Just be cool,” Russell replied. “I’m going to reach down and grab it for you, okay?”

Max stood at the ready a few feet away. The subtle growl had grown more intense, vicious. His dark-brown coat melded within the shadows, giving the German shepherd an ominous presence.

“I hope you trained that dog well because if it comes near me, chunks of your skull and brain matter will be painted everywhere.” The man spoke without a hint of hesitation to his voice.

Russell nodded, then peered over to his companion. “I understand. Max, stand down.”

The German shepherd’s head lowered toward the floor, fangs presented at the threat before him.

“Here.” Russell lifted the wallet into the air.

The man ripped it from his hand.

Russell lowered his arm and fought to stay calm. “Listen. Take what money is in the wallet. It’s yours. I don’t care. Just let us go.”

The wallet dropped to the floor at his side.

The barrel of the revolver didn’t budge from his skull.

“This is what you had to pay with?” he asked, disgusted. “It wouldn’t have gotten you too far.”

“Yes. That’s all I’ve got. I don’t want any trouble here.” Russell grabbed his wallet from the floor.

“Watch it there, pal. I’ve got a nasty trigger finger.” He grabbed Russell by the scruff of his shirt and yanked him off the floor.

Max barked and growled, then moved forward.

“Stop,” Russell said, with his palm facing the approaching canine.

The man turned Russell toward Max and used his body as a shield against the agitated dog. His flashlight shone over the canine’s face, highlighting the glistening fangs lining his mouth. “Doesn’t seem like he listens too well.”

“He doesn’t care for dirt bags and criminals,” Russell quipped. “It’s safe to say you fit the bill.”

“Funny.” The man walked backward with Russell in front of him. “Keep it up, and we’ll see how far that sense of humor will get you.”

“Where are you taking me?” Russell kept his hands in the air at ten and two.

Black Mustache removed the barrel of his revolver from the back of his head and pressed it into the small of his back. “I’m taking you to the back of the store.”

“I’m going out on a limb and assuming you don’t work here, so how did you get inside? I doubt they just left the door unlocked, so any thug or petty thief could come strolling in.” Russell watched Max stalking them through the aisle. The flashlight stayed glued to his every move.

“Lucky break, I guess.” Black Mustache dragged Russell around the end of the aisle where the sunlight beaming in through the front doors couldn’t reach.

“Help.” A muffled voice rang out in the dead silence of the store.
